The Cubs have recalled P Travis Wood from Iowa

Wood is needed because Matt Garza has the flu and is unable to make his start today against the Dodgers, but as I’m writing this a half-hour before game time, storms are bearing down on Chicago and the forecast for the day looks pretty sketchy. So Wood might not actually be needed after all.

Anyway, I speculated the other day that Wood had overtaken Randy Wells as the team’s sixth starter, and while Wells was not eligible to be recalled again, it looks like that may indeed be the case. He had an awful spring, and Wood’s ERA for Iowa is still high (5.08 after 5 starts), but his K/BB ratio of 3.75 is very good, and he’s been the victim of a .348 BAbip against, which is on the high side. His biggest problem is that he’s allowed 4 homers in only 28.1 IP, but on the whole I’d say that his play has been encouraging so far this season.
